We may be witnessing one of the largest tariff miscalculations in U.S. history. On April 2nd, President Trump unveiled a new set of “reciprocal tariffs” during the “Liberation Day” announcement — claiming the plan would raise over $3 trillion in revenue over 10 years. But serious questions are now being raised over the formula used to justify these tariffs, with American Enterprise Institute (AEI) warning that the numbers may have been inflated by as much as 400%. Here’s a breakdown of what happened and why it matters: ♦️ President Trump presented a visual showing new “reciprocal tariffs,” where the U.S. would charge 50% of what foreign countries are charging the U.S.       — If a country charged the U.S. 50%, the U.S. would now charge them 25%, which Trump described as an act of “kindness” rather than imposing full reciprocity. ♦️ However, it quickly became unclear how the administration determined what tariff rates each country was “charging the U.S.” — prompting scrutiny. ♦️ Later that day, the White House published a formula they claimed calculated these foreign tariffs. The formula essentially took:       Tariff = (Trade Deficit / U.S. Imports)       — For example, with China:           • U.S. Imports: $439B           • Trade Deficit: $295B           • Implied Tariff = 295/439 ≈ 67%           • Reciprocal U.S. Tariff = 34% (50% of 67%) ♦️ But there’s a critical catch: a minimum 10% tariff was imposed on all countries — regardless of their existing trade behavior.       — Even Singapore, known for free trade, was slapped with a 10% tariff on April 5th. AEI Dissects the Formula: ♦️ AEI dug into the formula and found that two elasticity variables cancel out:       • Elasticity of import demand with respect to import prices (ε)       • Elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs (φ) ♦️ AEI criticizes the assumption that the elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs is just 0.25%, which greatly inflates the resulting tariff estimate. ♦️ Economists argue this number is far too low — the correct assumption should be closer to 1.0.       — Why? Because the 0.25% elasticity was based on retail price response, not import price response, which is what matters in this case.       — The original academic source cited by the administration explicitly distinguishes between the two — but the wrong one was still used. Impact of the Miscalculation: ♦️ If AEI’s analysis is correct, the actual foreign tariffs being charged on the U.S. should be about 25% of what was shown. ♦️ This would mean the reciprocal U.S. tariffs implemented on April 2nd are 75% too high. ♦️ AEI provided a table with corrected estimates showing that most of the “reciprocal” rates are wildly overstated. ♦️ As it stands, the weighted average tariff on U.S. imports could reach nearly 30%, but if AEI’s corrected model is right, the actual level should be closer to 7.5%. So What Really Happened? ♦️ It’s still unclear whether the administration officially used this formula or if it was a "back-of-the-envelope" approach using rough trade balance figures. ♦️ If the formula was in fact used, it appears there was a critical misinterpretation of key economic concepts that exaggerated foreign tariff rates. Consequences Are Already Playing Out: ♦️ The S&P 500 lost nearly $6 trillion in value over just 2 days last week — marking the worst drop since March 2020. Markets are demanding clarity. ♦️ U.S. companies, trying to front-run the tariffs, drove the 2-month goods trade deficit to $301 billion, a historic surge. ♦️ Tariffs of this magnitude have not been seen in over 100 years, and global markets are reacting accordingly. In Summary: We are at a pivotal moment. If the White House miscalculated, a massive course correction may be needed — both economically and politically. Clarification on the methodology used is urgently needed, especially as the world reacts to what could be the most consequential tariff policy blunder in modern history.
