BGB Sail: December Edition

The focus of our BGB Sail Series is on the monthly performance of BGB, with a recap of the market situation at the end of each month. BGB Sail: November Edition can be found here. Market Summary The aftermath of FTX continued into December, with global search interest in crypto topics further declined: searches for Ethereum remained below 15 searches/day, while it’s below 45 searches/day for Bitcoin. DeFi’s popularity swayed a bit downwards, but the overall sentiment towards the topic was still strong. That is understandable as DeFi seems to be the solution for cases like FTX. When we talk about DeFi, it’s simply a must to mention Total Value Locked (TVL). TVL shows that most assets were locked on Ethereum, unsurprisingly. However, Tron has been rising to the 2nd place, competing fiercely against BNB Chain ever since May-June (around the Terra/LUNA collapse). And in December, Tron’s TVL has comfortably surpassed that of BNB Chain. Aggregated TVL of all chains didn’t change much in December. Source: The Block The Top 3 categories by TVL have always been decentralized exchanges (DEXs), Lending and Collateralised Debt Position (CDP), but CDP is gradually catching up with Lending. In November, the ratio between CDP and Lending varied between 0.71-0.74 and has increased to 0.75-0.78 in the last month of 2022. What does it mean? CDP is the func-tion of MakerDAO that allows users to lock their cryptocurrencies to generate DAI. An increase in the TVL of CDP means that more DeFi users, and crypto users in general, could be switching to DAI a.k.a. the true decentralized stablecoin. Trust in centralized exchanges (CEXs) hasn’t been restored, resulting in a sustained outflow of Bitcoin from CEXs. Data from CryptoQuant shows that Bitcoin reserves from all exchanges dropped to the lowest levels since 2020 in December, with the lowest recorded hitting 2.140 million BTC across nearly 40 exchanges. Netflows were not as bad as in June but it definitely reflected a mounting concern of investors as the outflows perpetuated. Source: CryptoQuant BGB Performance in December Exchange tokens’ value didn’t show much change in December; the only one with a small breakout is OKB. BGB experienced a minor loss (-7.5%), but demand for BGB was legitimately persistent; this is the only token with a one-digit decrease in monthly volume. All other exchange tokens saw at least a 30% decline in volume, no matter if their value went up or down. That is how reliable BGB appears to be as an exchange token, well, BGB investors must consider the token a good keep, otherwise they would have come rushing to dump BGB, right? It’s important to highlight that in the extreme case of OKB, volume still plunged despite the positive returns. Trading interest should actually go up when the asset’s value increases, because people want to get it before it’s too late (though diamond hands want to hold and wait for better prices). Market Summary Undoubtedly, when we talk about November, the first thing to appear in our mind now is the collapse of FTX - an event that has shaken the whole crypto industry to the core. We want to cover details about it in a separate reading, so stay tuned and subscribe to us to not miss anything! Now, before FTX, Bitcoin prices had been clinging nicely to the US$20,000 mark - activities were within the normal range across markets - spot, futures, even ETFs. The number of Bitcoin addresses that hold more than 1 whole Bitcoin hit a new all-time high of 921,578, per Glassnode. Source: Glassnode This figure further supports CryptoCompare's Q3 Review that shows consistent accumulation of BTC in almost all accounts. Source: CryptoCompare Then Sam Bankman-Fried, his troubled exchange and faulty hedge fund Alameda Research entered the picture. A timeline of the FTX story Alameda was a major funding source for several crypto startups, while FTX was home for big players, market makers, lenders, well, you name it. FTX in liquidity crunch and consequently insolvency means that many billions of dollars in digital assets can no longer come back to their original owners. After FTX(dot)com halted withdrawals, we began to see a crash. Source: Coinalyze See how BTC prices plummeted to 15K-something (that’s a decrease of approximately 25%) in less than 2 days? Far worse, it triggered more than US$1 million in liquidations on centralised exchanges within November 8 - November 9, turning on the ‘extremely bearish’ mode. Funding rate quickly shot up to -0.033% on Binance (the highest for CEXs) and -0.107% on dYdX on the second funding cycle of November 9 to -0.119% on Binance and -0.171% on dYdX on the last funding cycle of the same day. The trust issue that arises with the fall of FTX caused a huge outflow of funds from exchanges. Data from CryptoQuant shows it reached levels similar to when Terra (LUNA) tumbled, if not higher. That could also explain why there were more Bitcoin addresses with more than 1 BTC holdings. Source: CryptoQuant The effect, of course, also spread to the ETFs market. On November 9, the aggregated volume for two most important Bitcoin ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSEARCA:BITO) and ProShares Bitcoin Short Strategy ETF (NYSEARCA:BITI), skyrocketed to nearly US$1 billion. Source: Eric Balchunas As Bitcoin dominance remained above 40% since August, the global crypto market cap and altcoin prices took a nosedive because of this event. From the all-time high of US$2.92 trillion and the recent new normal of US$900 billion-US$1 trillion, the market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies sunk to US$793 billion. Source: Macrobond, Morgan Stanley Research From a macro perspective, we saw signs of a possible dovish move from the Federal Reserve (FED) as the U.S. CPI experienced a slight relief. Compared to September, October's figure demonstrates a 0.4% growth, that is, a 7.7% YoY increase. The expectations were 0.6% MoM and 7.9% YoY, therefore (we thought) we had good reason to be bullish. Then the non-farm payroll figures came in after FTX, with the employment increasing by 263,000 instead of the forecasted 200,000. We are currently in the blackout period before the final rate decision of 2022 tomorrow (December 14), so take some quiet time and zoom out before deciding on any move. In short, we can expect a new local peak in the short-term future, but until then, it’s extremely unlikely that there will be any radical move from BGB. The current consensus is showing a projection of less than 0.75%, according to FedWatch Tool. Source: FedWatch Tool Meanwhile, the notorious SBF has confirmed that he’ll be testifying before the U.S. House on December 13 (Tuesday) to help shed light on the collapse of FTX, which has caused many big players in the crypto industry to go into limbo, if not to go bankrupt, thus capturing the attention of regulatory watchdogs. Crypto lender Genesis did not only have US$175 million stuck on FTX but also made loans to Alameda Research. And with Genesis being the official partner of the Gemini Earn program, the impact is enormous. A report by CoinDesk reveals that Genesis currently owes US$1.8 billion to their creditors, including US$900 million to Gemini users. Some other crypto players hit by the fall of FTX include M11 Credit (a pool delegate of Maple Finance), Maple Finance, Orthogonal Trading and Nexus Mutual. It turned out that the Sydney-based hedge fund Orthogonal Trading ‘have been operating while effectively insolvent’, therefore unable to pay back the US$10 million USDC loan to M11 Credit on Maple Finance and received a notice of default for four loans totalling US$36 million in the USDC and wETH pools. Maple Finance, of course, took the hit, with MPL (Maple Finance’s native token) down by -23.55% in the last seven days. Insurance products provider Nexus Mutual is expecting a 2,461 ETH (ca. US$3 million) loss due to their exposure to the wETH pool on Maple Finance. Off-shore crypto companies are being addressed by the European Commission with regards to reverse solicitation (i.e. passive servicing), that is, when foreign crypto asset service providers are contacted by EU residents themselves, without being affected by any promotion or publicity by such entities, and reporting on transactions of EU-based clients to tax authorities. Hong Kong has already passed the Amendment Bill 2022 that introduces a new licensing regime for virtual asset service providers, with tracking customers’ crypto purchases being one major requirement. The U.K. is set to announce new crypto regulations, which should be similar to the EU’s MiCA. It is meant to better protect the British from cases like FTX and provide clearer guidelines to support the development of the crypto industry in the region, in addition to the Edinburgh Reforms (keywords: innovation, technology people and businesses across the UK). A potentially good news is that the North Carolina Republican Patrick McHenry is selected as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. Bitcoin’s 20-day volatility also matched that of NASDAQ and was only a tad higher than that of the SP500 in October, also for the first time since 2020. Source: Bloomberg Be it true or not, the number of and value of BTCUSDT">Bitcoin perpetual contracts increased massively in October. Within the first four days of October, Bitcoin's open interest across exchanges has risen by at least 60,000 Bitcoin. Source: Arcane Research But other cryptocurrencies were hurting in the bear market. Crypto blue chip yields have been sliding since the dismay of May and seeing year’s lows in September and October. Blockchain projects saw a dropping in capital injections for the second consecutive quarter, falling to the second lowest quarter of funding since 2021 at US$6,217,000,000. Source: The Block One contributor to the dread may very well be the hacks and attacks, which further smeared the industry name. The biggest exploits in October include the notorious US$586 million hack on BNB Chain, the US$2 million hack of QANplatform’s offline bridge, the US$2.3 million TempleDAO hack, the US$100 million hack of Mango Markets on Solana, the US$8.4 million hack of Moola Market, the 30,437 OHM hack and the exploit of Ethereum Alarm Clock's smart contract for 204 ETH. Analysis by Solidus Labs also shows that BNB Chain is home to the most scam projects, with 12.02% of the token contracts being a sham. How To Calculate Individual P/L Ratio The formula for calculating individual P/L ratio is given below: Prize Pool • The individual prize pool size will be determined by the number of participants as follows: • The top 5,000 individuals will share the Individual Prize Pool. Football Accumulation Participants will be given a plethora of easy-peasy tasks to complete and earn the footballs. Held twice annually, Bitget’s King’s Cup Global Invitation (KCGI) is the first-class international trading competition for existing and soon-to-be Bitget users. This article will walk you through every little detail about KCGI - our history, requirements, how-tos, and prize pools for this event. Scroll down to not miss a dang thing! Bitget’s KCGI Introduction Bitget’s King’s Cup Global Invitation (KCGI) was first introduced in 2021 as an exclusive event for the global trader community in the derivatives segment. We have already organised two successful series of KCGI, each with a different theme to fan the flames of excitement. The first theme was Defend the Earth against Pixel Invasion, where traders assembled into a coalition to defend their homeland against the Pixels, a quantum civilisation six light years away. The Throne’s Calling was the second theme, which attracted 4,754 seasoned traders - known as Lords - competing against each other and against other teams to be crowned King/Queen. A total of 10 BTC in prizes have been distributed to the Top 9 Best Teams, Top 10 Individuals by P/L Ratio and Top 10 Individuals by Profits. The theme for Bitget’s third KCGI is World Cup 2022 - the biggest and the most famous international football tournament. Bitget’s KCGI x World Cup 2022 This year’s 2nd KCGI takes place simultaneously with the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. As the names suggest, individual traders will compete against each other in the individual league or create/join a team to participate in team battles. The more participants there are, the more prize pools will be expanded. There is another format this time: Invitation Competition. Similar to a referral competition, the Invitation league allows participants to share a mystery box of greater value with more successful invitations. Bigger Prizes, More Fun Where to begin? Regional Division The five official regions in Bitget’s KCGI include Asia, CIS, Europe, Latin America, and Turkey. Results will be calculated in the corresponding currency standard. Participation Requirements (1) For the Individual Competition: • Any users who have completed their Bitget registration must have a minimum of 300 USDT in their Futures account to join this league and achieve a tota l trading volume of at least 30,000 USDT at the end of the competition period to share the prize pool; • Users must accumulate at least 4,000 footballs (we’ll talk about this later!) to qualify for the rewards. (2) For the Team Battle: • Each team must have at least 11 members, unlimited number of players per team; • Each team member (team captain included) must have a minimum of 300 USDT in their Futures account to register and join/form a team; • By the end of the competition period, each team member must have achieved a total trading volume of at least 30,000 USDT to be eligible for prize sharing. (3) For the Invitation Competition: Any users who have completed their Bitget registration can join the Invitation Competition. Prize Pools The three main prize pools are for Individual Competition (up to 2,000,000 USDT), Team Battle (up to 100 BTC) and Invitation Competition (260,000 USDT). You can decide the prize pool size: The more teams and individuals join the competition, the bigger the prize pool. Extra Juicy: There are additional rewards for KCGI participant as follows:• Early bird rewards: Users who register in the first 48 hours of the registration period and complete their KYC will each receive 50 USDT as trading bonus; • Golden ball awards: Captains of the three teams with the most valid participants will get a jersey with a football star’s autograph; • Golden boot awards: Users who register during the competition period and have the highest P/L ratio will get a jersey with a football star’s autograph; • Golden glove awards: Users who make the most valid referrals will get a jersey with a football star’s autograph; • Daily lucky draw: After the competition starts, three users with a trading volume of more than US$100,000 on the previous day will be randomly chosen to receive US$1,000 in fan tokens.
