Donald Trump Jr-backed Kalshi is in the clear, CFTC withdraws appeal
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has finally decided to dismiss its appeal against Kalshi, a derivatives trading platform, in a case that saw the agency debating the legality of election event contracts.
According to reports, the CFTC filed a motion on May 5, 2025, with the D.C. Circuit Court to voluntarily dismiss its appeal in its case against Kalshi.
The filing indicated that the CFTC and Kalshi agreed to the dismissal, and both parties chose to take care of their respective legal costs and fees. The CFTC did not share details about the reason for the withdrawal of the appeal. However, the decision was reportedly made after a 3-0 vote by the commission (with one commissioner abstaining) to drop the case.
The CFTC previously blew hard against Kalshi’s offering of event contracts that allowed betting on events like the U.S. election. In a defense of its stance, it argued that such contracts could threaten the democratic process or constitute “gaming” outside the agency’s jurisdiction.
In September 2024, a federal district court judge in Washington, D.C., ruled in favor of Kalshi, giving it the right to offer these contracts. The appeal about to be dismissed was the CFTC’s response to that ruling.
The dismissal does not come as a surprise to many as it was expected given the new administration’s more friendly disposition towards prediction platforms. There’s also the fact that Kalshi now has ties to the Trump family through Donald Trump Jr., its strategic adviser. President Trump’s nominee for CFTC Chair, Brian Quintenz, also happens to be a Kalshi board member.
Kalshi’s CEO, Tarek Mansour, celebrated the development, stating on X that “election markets are here to stay,” a post that reflects his confidence in the platform’s future.
While it seems like an agreement has been reached between the CFTC and Kalshi, the company is not yet completely out of the woods because the D.C. Circuit Court retains the authority to deny the dismissal motion.
This fact was highlighted by gaming attorney Daniel Wallach, who posted a thread about the matter on X. “The agreement between the CFTC and Kalshi to dismiss the appeal is not binding on the DC Circuit,” he wrote before adding that, “Appellate courts have been known to deny stipulated motions to dismiss appeals that have been fully briefed and orally argued, especially when they involve issues of public importance.”
The court’s decision could depend on procedural or legal considerations, since the appeal had gone far enough, with oral arguments already heard. Furthermore, Kalshi still faces regulatory scrutiny over other event contracts, particularly those related to sports, from state regulators in areas like Nevada and New Jersey.
Despite these legal and regulatory challenges and the possibility of the dismissal to be rejected, the willingness of the CFTC to even have it thrown out is proof of a maturing regulatory climate sponsored by the new friendly Trump administration.
If the case is resolved, it would mark a significant milestone for prediction markets in the U.S. and a big win for Kalshi because it wouldn’t have to lose the huge market share associated with election-related markets.

Silk Road-linked wallets move 3,421 BTC worth $322.5M; over a decade of dormancy
Two dormant Silk Road-linked wallets on May 5 moved 3,421 Bitcoin worth approximately $322.5 million. Whale Alert noted the wallets were first activated in July 2013, marking their first transaction in over a decade since inception.
The new addresses that received the funds remain idle, while the original wallets reflect a zero balance. Data showed that the transactions included a minimal fee of 0.000105 BTC, suggesting a non-urgent transfer with internal restructuring rather than immediate plans to liquidate assets.
On-chain data revealed two separate transactions on Monday that originated from wallets established in July 2013 during the Silk Road saga. Multichain explorer and analytics tool Blockchair found that the initial transaction involved 2,343.481 BTC.
Data also showed that the first wallet to send funds executed 21 outputs, with 30 routed to a newly generated wallet. The total value of the digital assets exceeded $221 million at the time of the transfer.
Whale alert showed the transfer occurred in a series of outputs, with the largest being 2,186 BTC sent in one chunk. The on-chain tracking data platform also noted that no portion of the funds has moved to any exchange wallets.
The blockchain tracking tool also flagged a second transaction involving 1,078.99 BTC to a wallet that was also initialized on July 11, 2013. The funds were transferred at block height 895,433 and are now valued at approximately $101 million.
Whale Alert noted the second movement shortly after the first wallet became active, but no movement has occurred from the receiving wallet since the transfer was completed. The second wallet also used a similar transaction fee, according to the blockchain tracking platform.
Sani, the architect behind Timechain Index, highlighted that the digital assets in question trace back to the infamous darknet marketplace, the Silk Road.

Earlier this year, Director at Coinbase Conor Grogan flagged 430 BTC distributed across various wallets potentially linked to the founder of Silk Road Ross Ulbricht. The exchange’s official said the digital asset holdings, estimated to be worth $47 million, had been untouched for over a decade.
Grogan also acknowledged that the funds were not part of the more than 100,000 BTC seized by the U.S. authorities during Silk Road’s 2013 shutdown. He noted the wallets had grown substantially due to Bitcoin’s surge in price. Grogan revealed the screenshot of one notable wallet with 89.77 BTC, valued at approximately $9.5M. There were also smaller holdings, such as 87.7 Bitcoin Cash (BCH), worth around $39,700 at the time.
The Coinbase official suggested that Ulbricht still possessed airdrop rewards linked to the wallets but questioned whether the private keys required to access the funds remain available to him after years of inactivity.
Grogan also addressed concerns about the potential implications of publicizing his finding, concerns it might direct unnecessary attention toward Ulbricht. He said that the wallet details are publicly accessible and have also been referenced in court documents.
The Silk Road marketplace founder was convicted in 2015 for his role in operating the platform. He later received a presidential pardon from President Donald Trump on January 22 after serving over a decade in prison.

Carney fires back at Trump saying Canada is not for sale
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made headlines today with a passionate “No” to US President Donald Trump’s provocative suggestion that Canada should be the 51st American state.
Carney sent a strong message in a Tuesday meeting at the White House . “Canada is not for sale,” he told President Trump in the Oval Office. “It won’t be for sale — ever.”
The comment was prompted by a remark from Trump that Canada should be made its 51st state.
It was the first face-to-face meeting between the two men since Carney won the elections last month. The former central banker campaigned on a stridently anti-Trump platform, vowing to resist US interference in Canadian affairs.

Canadians value their independence, Carney stressed, and no one will ever agree to be a part of the United States.
He added that he had spoken to the real owners of Canada — the people — and they had clarified that Canada was not on the market.
But Trump said , “never say never,” after Canada’s PM said that Canada is not for sale. He insists it won’t make talks harder and points out that even “not doable” deals get done if they’re in the interests of both parties and are made by negotiators who become friends.
The exchange of territory was not the only thing on the table. Carney challenged Trump’s overlong-running trade disputes , including US tariffs on Canadian steel, lumber, and cars.
Canada is protesting that the tariffs would be illegal under the existing free-trade agreement — the same pact Trump vowed to scrap shortly after taking office. Carney urged them to back off, regretting the damage to Canadian businesses and jobs.
However, Trump refused, insisting that the US does not need products from Canada. He said the country is building several steel industries, and the tariffs will soon make sense to Americans.
Analysts say the crisis could be costly for both economies. Canadian manufacturers are already cutting back, and some American companies are getting pinched by the higher prices.
In Canada, Trump’s annexation comments sent a shudder of dismay. Criticism was swift on social media. Canadian politicians of all stripes quickly criticized the proposal. A public opinion poll released yesterday shows that more than 85% of Canadians would be against any suggestion to become part of the US.
Carney later released a short statement, saying that he believes in strong relations with the US — but on equal footing.
The two shook hands to close the meeting, but that doesn’t mean tension has subsided.
The two sides agreed to continue discussing a trade deal, but no new deals were announced. Analysts said the divide will likely grow in the months ahead, especially as the US election season heats up.
But Carney’s tough talk is winning applause at home. Many Canadians consider his strong words a much-needed contrast to Trump’s escalating aggressiveness.
The two leaders were cordial but cautious, leaving observers unsure if this was just a dramatic moment or the start of a prolonged standoff.
