The event will begin with opening remarks at 1:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from 1:20 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., moderated by Troy Paredes.

The SEC is kicking off its “Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity” roundtable series today, March 21, at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. The first session, called “How We Got Here and How We Get Out – Defining Security Status,” will dive into the ongoing debate over how crypto assets should be classified under U.S. regulations.

This highly anticipated event will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET and is open to the public, though space for in-person attendance is limited. For those unable to make it, the discussion will be streamed live on the SEC’s website, with a recording available later.

Since its launch in January, the Crypto Task Force, headed by Commissioner Hester Peirce, has been working to bring more clarity to crypto regulations. This roundtable kicks off a series of discussions aimed at involving industry leaders, investors, and the public in crafting a workable and transparent regulatory framework.

“The Crypto Task Force exhibits deep expertise and an enthusiastic commitment to identifying—with the help of other talented staff across the Commission and interested members of the public—workable solutions to difficult crypto regulatory problems,” Peirce stated .

What’s on the agenda?

The event will begin with opening remarks at 1:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from 1:20 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., moderated by Troy Paredes, former SEC Commissioner and founder of Paredes Strategies LLC.

The panel features some of the most influential voices in crypto law, regulation, and policy, including:

  • Collins Belton (Managing Partner, Brookwood P.C.)
  • Sarah Brennan (General Counsel, Delphi Ventures)
  • Chris Brummer (Professor, Georgetown Law)
  • Lewis Cohen (Co-Chair, CahillNXT)
  • Coy Garrison (Partner, Steptoe)
  • Teresa Goody Guillen (Partner, BakerHostetler)
  • Miles Jennings (General Counsel, a16z Crypto)
  • Lee Reiners (Lecturing Fellow, Duke Law)
  • Benjamin Schiffrin (Director of Securities Policy, Better Markets)
  • Rodrigo Seira (Special Counsel, Cooley LLP)
  • John Reed Stark (President, John Reed Stark Consulting LLC)

After a 30-minute break at 3:00 p.m., the event will resume with a town hall session from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., where attendees can directly engage with the panelists.

The SEC’s Crypto Task Force, which kicked off in January 2025 with Acting Chairman Mark T. Uyeda at the helm, is tackling the messy world of crypto regulations head-on. To clear up the confusion, make registrations simpler, and sharpen enforcement efforts. This roundtable series is a big part of getting it done.
