Cosmos integrates native EVM framework
The Cosmos ecosystem has taken a significant step forward by open-sourcing Evmos (CRYPTO:EVMOS), now rebranded as Cosmos EVM, under the Apache 2.0 license.
This move positions Cosmos EVM as the canonical Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) implementation for the Cosmos SDK, enabling seamless integration of Ethereum smart contracts across the Cosmos network.
Cosmos EVM is designed to enhance interoperability between the Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) and Cosmos ecosystems, allowing developers to deploy Ethereum smart contracts on any Cosmos SDK-based chain without significant modifications.
This integration supports JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallet compatibility, facilitating cross-chain communication through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
The Interchain Foundation (ICF) has funded this initiative, which marks a strategic shift towards embracing Ethereum's execution environment.
This aligns with broader industry trends, where ecosystems like Tezos (CRYPTO:XTZ) and EOS (CRYPTO:EOS) are also integrating EVM to leverage its network effects.
Federico Kunze Küllmer, co-founder of Evmos, will transition to an advisory role for Cosmos EVM, focusing on interoperability and modular architecture.
His firm, Altiplanic, will no longer contribute to the Evmos project.
The open-sourcing of Cosmos EVM is expected to empower developers by providing a standardised framework for building EVM-powered blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem.
This development could significantly enhance the ecosystem's appeal by offering compatibility with the vast array of Ethereum smart contracts and applications.
"We’re going to make it extremely seamless for Cosmos developers to have an EVM and extend its functionality with Cosmos," noted by Barry Plunkett, co-CEO of Interchain Labs.
