New Phantom Wallet Seed Phrase Scam
A new and more sophisticated phishing scam is making the rounds, and Phantom wallet users need to stay vigilant.
Scammers are using a clever new tactic that connects to legitimate Phantom wallets .
They then trick users into giving away their sensitive information. Let’s discover more about this new seed phrase scam method.
Scammers Target Phantom Wallets with Fake Seed Phrase Pop-Up
Here’s how it works: the scammers first connect to a real Phantom wallet, making the initial interaction look completely legitimate. Then, they present a fake “update extension” signature request. If a user approves the request, a deceptive pop-up appears, asking for the wallet’s seed phrase.
This is where things get tricky. The modal demanding the seed phrase looks almost identical to legitimate Phantom requests, but it’s a well-crafted fake. It’s designed to deceive users into thinking they need to enter their seed phrase to continue using their wallets. The danger here is real: once scammers have the seed phrase, they can empty the wallet of its funds in the blink of an eye.

It’s important to remember one cardinal rule in crypto: never enter your seed phrase anywhere—especially when prompted unexpectedly. Your seed phrase is the key to your wallet, and anyone with access to it can take full control. A legitimate crypto wallet will never ask for your seed phrase after an extension update or any similar request.
What You Can Do
Here are a few steps to protect yourself:
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): If your wallet offers 2FA, use it. It adds an extra layer of security.
- Check URLs Carefully: Always verify the URL of the site or extension before entering any sensitive information. Scammers often use very similar but slightly altered URLs.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a phishing attempt, report it to Phantom Wallet support immediately. Sharing this information can help others stay safe.
