Blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer has reported a new type of scam that combines social engineering and fake Telegram-bots.
Experts said that criminals create fake accounts on social networks, posing as popular crypto influencers, and then invite users to their groups in Telegram. After going to the resource, potential victims are offered to undergo verification using the fake bot OfficiaISafeguardBot.
Once used, OfficiaISafeguardBot injects malware into the user's smartphone or computer to steal private keys. Scam Sniffer experts have found "numerous instances" of thefts, as the scam using a fake Telegram-bot "has been around for a long time."
This is the first time we see such a specific combination of fake social media accounts, fake channels Telegram and malicious bots. It is unclear whether there are other similar fake bots, the company said.
Blockchain security analysts have noted a surge in activity by scammers posing as well-known members of the crypto community. On average, the Scam Sniffer monitoring system has detected 300 scammers per day in December, up from 160 in November. At least two victims are known to have lost more than $3 million by clicking on malicious links.
