Sui Network Sets New Record for Blockchain Transaction Speed, Becomes Industry's Fastest Consensus Layer
Sui is an innovative Layer 1 blockchain offering industry-leading performance and unlimited horizontal scalability. Today, it announced on its official Twitter that its latest consensus protocol, Mysticeti, has been successfully deployed to the testnet. This significant breakthrough reduces the consensus time on the Sui testnet by 80% to 390 milliseconds while maintaining the protocol's industry-leading throughput. This impressive demonstration proves that Sui is the fastest consensus layer in the industry.
Mysticeti is developed based on in-depth research into Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus mechanisms, showing significant improvements over the Narwhal-Bullshark consensus algorithm introduced when Sui mainnet launched a year ago. It achieves unprecedented transaction speeds and reduces CPU requirements for validator nodes. This improvement extends Sui's excellent low-latency performance to all transaction types on the network.
Sui's unique object-oriented architecture allows the network to handle transactions differently based on the characteristics of the transactions and related objects. On Sui, transactions involving "exclusive objects" (such as peer-to-peer transfers) do not require consensus and follow a fast path, completing in a shorter time. Transactions involving the same shared objects (e.g., transactions involving markets, auctions, or collaborative game assets) require consensus. Previously, this meant more processing delays, but now Mysticeti changes this by using an optimized version of BFT consensus to handle shared object transactions. Mysticeti is designed to minimize communication between validator nodes and fully utilize network bandwidth to maintain high throughput.
"Mysticeti is not only a significant leap for Sui but also a major advancement for blockchain technology as a whole," said George Danezis, founder of Sui Network, a pioneer in global BFT consensus research, and co-founder and Chief Scientist of Mysten Labs. "It reduces consensus latency to what we believe is the minimum while retaining the advantages of high capacity and low computational cost. It also allows for faster-than-consensus transaction processing within the same protocol, a unique feature of Sui. Mysticeti is an example of Sui once again pushing the limits of blockchain technology."
The results of Mysticeti on the testnet are remarkable, reducing transaction submission latency by 80% compared to Narwhal. Mysticeti's enhancements significantly reduce complexity and optimize resource usage, enabling the Sui network to process tens of thousands of transactions per second with less than one-second latency.
These advancements are crucial for Sui as it continues to solidify its top position in blockchain speed and scale, providing a seamless experience for large-scale developers and users.
"The launch of Mysticeti is the result of successful collaboration between research, engineering, and our validator node community," said Dmitri Perelman, Head of Engineering at Mysten Labs. "The lessons learned from building and tuning the previous generation of consensus production provided the background and inspiration for researchers to propose the new protocol. After the first Mysticeti prototype demonstrated undeniable performance advantages, the engineering team fully supported its implementation, and the new generation of consensus will be rolled out to the mainnet with the support of validator nodes within a few months."
Kevin Nelson, co-founder of Aftermath Finance, said, "Mysten has proven that a DAG-based structure can surpass state-of-the-art performance in terms of consensus throughput and latency. We are excited about the launch of Mysticeti on the testnet and look forward to its release on the mainnet. Additionally, we anticipate leveraging Mysticeti's new design to provide a better end-to-end experience on Aftermath."
Greg Siourounis, Head of the Sui Foundation, added, "Low latency and fast transaction speeds have always been fundamental values that make Sui the preferred platform for developers, and now Mysticeti makes the developer experience even better. This breakthrough once again demonstrates our continuous and relentless focus on innovation, opening up new possibilities for the types and quality of decentralized applications built on Sui."
The key innovations of Mysticeti are detailed in the newly released paper "Mysticeti: Low-Latency DAG Consensus with Fast Commit Path," which showcases the scalability of this new technology and is available for review.
