Babylon Labs has officially launched Babylon Genesis, the first-ever Layer-1 blockchain secured by Bitcoin. Babylon Labs (BABY) just announced that Babylon Genesis Layer-1. This launch follows the initial Phase 1 rollout in August 2024, which introduced Bitcoin ( BTC ) staking through self-custodial contracts. Since the initial launch, the protocol has attracted 49678.65 BTC ($4.06B) staked in self-custodial contracts. According to DefiLlama , Babylon currently ranks second in Total Value Locked among restaking protocols, after EigenLayer . With today’s launch, the project enters Phase 2. This stage includes the full release of the Genesis blockchain, the activation of core infrastructure such as validator nodes and finality providers, and the debut of the BABY token, which is now available for transfers and staking . Eligible users will receive airdropped BABY tokens directly to their wallets, and both transferring and staking the token are supported from day one. The final phase, Phase 3, will introduce additional Bitcoin-Secured Networks, enabling other blockchains to access BTC staking security and liquidity via Babylon Genesis Layer-1. Babylon offers a unique way to stake Bitcoin in that it allows users to lock their BTC in self-custodial contracts while maintaining ownership. Unlike traditional staking, where assets are handed over to a smart contract or custodian, Babylon’s method ensures full control remains with the user. If a participant, like a validator or finality provider, acts dishonestly, their staked BTC can be “slashed” (partially penalized), similar to Proof-of-Stake blockchains. “Bitcoin OGs really care about custodying [their] own keys, having control over [their] own financial decisions,” said Spencer Yang, co-founder of Fractal Bitcoin, in an interview . The blockchain is secured by validators staking BABY token and finality providers staking BTC for extra security. Looking ahead, one major feature to look out for is a trust-minimized bridge between Bitcoin and Genesis, called BitVM2. This will enable BTC to flow into the Babylon ecosystem without relying on multisig setups, using slashing and cryptographic techniques to enforce trustless behavior.

Exaion, a subsidiary of French electric utility giant EDF Group, is now a validator of Etherlink, the Tezos-powered layer 2 blockchain. Exaion, which offers high-performance computing and cloud solutions for blockchains, has joined Etherlink, an Ethereum ( ETH ) Virtual Machine compatible L2 powered by Tezos ( XTZ ) smart rollups, as validator. The move follows a key milestone that saw Exaion join Tezos as a corporate baker in October 2020. As an EVM -compatible layer 2 platform, Etherlink enables non-custodial and seamless integration with Ethereum tools, leveraging Tezos’ rollup technology for scalability and accountability. Integration across the Ethereum ecosystem includes wallets and indexers. The layer 2 chain, which launched in late 2024, also connects to other EVM-compatible chains. “By joining Etherlink as a Smart Rollup node operator, we can play a role in maintaining network security while providing a high-quality digital service to anyone using the chain,” said Fatih Balyeli, chief executive officer and co-founder of Exaion. “We’re proud to continue supporting Tezos, an example of French technological ingenuity that aligns with our own mission.” Exaion’s move to become an Etherlink validator comes as the Tezos L2 blockchain solution gains traction just months after going live. Etherlink has attracted projects such as money market funds platform Spiko and Coinbase-backed real-world assets platform Midas. Other platforms are also testing various use cases on the L2, including tokenized assets and contract deployments. Exaion’s launch of validator operations for the network adds to overall stability and decentralization as growth continues. “Rollup security relies on the presence of at least one honest validator,” said Arthur Breitman, co-founder of Tezos. “So the more reputable parties validating the Etherlink rollup, the more robust it is.”

The Pi Network, launched in February this year, set out on a strong rally after its native token, PI, attained an all-time high of $2.99 in less than a week. However, this rally was short-lived. Since then, the token has bled by over 80%, trading at $0.5801. This market price also represents a 19.6% drop in the last seven days, though it has seen a slight recovery of 5% in the past 24 hours. As evidenced by data from Coinmarketcap, this also accounts for a 39.42% decline in its trading volume, leaving the mark at $289.23 million. While the token is down, the broader crypto market is also in a state of devastation. Notably, Bitcoin (BTC) has dropped over 6% in the last 30 days, and Ethereum (ETH) has fallen by more than 27% in the same period. Amidst the panic, one John Lang, a Pi Network node runner, has stood firm on the token’s future prospects. Via a tweet on the X platform, the stout believer has reassured fellow Pioneers that the PiCoreTeam (PCT) is working behind the scenes, diligently building and refining the network. In his message, Lang emphasizes the complexity of the team’s task and the sheer amount of work still required to bring Pi Network to its full potential. He concluded that “Just trust the process, and whatever the market condition is, never sell your Pi cheap.” Lang’s remarks follow the backlash against PiDaoSwap’s grievances against the PiCoreTeam’s slow pace of Know Your Business (KYB) approval. Projects have to apply for a KYB and clear the PCT’s due diligence procedure to build on the Network. PiDaoSwap tweeted on X that its KYB application has been pending for more than 2 weeks without being approved. Describing the waiting period as “agonizing and excessively prolonged,” PiDaoSwap claims the delay has stalled its full-scale development on the Pi mainnet. In response, the project resolved to launch its non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) as a temporary measure to maintain momentum and keep the community engaged pending PCT approval. Besides the delays in KYB, the PCT is also under fire for the slow pace of listing Pi Coin on top exchanges. Binance has yet to include Pi in its “Vote to List” program, and Bybit also didn’t list Pi Network despite growing requests from the community. On the bright side, BTCC Exchange, one of the oldest crypto exchanges in the world since 2011, listed Pi Coin, which increased its credibility as the market looks forward to the potential listing by Upbit Exchange. In the meantime, Pi’s Network domain auction project keeps gaining momentum. As we pointed out in our last article , bidding for domains is open to Pioneers on the Mainnet alone. Already, the auction has recorded more than 200,000 bids by over 40,000 unique bidders for more than 95,000 domains.
